September: The Breeze Blows the Pine Trees

Series; Flowers, Birds, Wind, and Moon, 1975

Flowers, Birds, Wind, and Moon - In 1975, Tokuriki created a series of 12 woodblocks based on original paintings by the artist Shimizu Kosho (1911 - 1999). Shimizu served as abbot of the Buddhist Todai-ji Temple in Nara from 1975 - 1981, thereafter devoting himself to painting, calligraphy, and pottery until his death. Tokuriki's prints are a tour de force of woodblock printing, expertly capturing the handsome calligraphic line work and washes of color of the originals, something very difficult to achieve in the medium of woodblock. While the series title is "Flowers, Birds, Wind, and Moon," the subjects are not literal interpretations of the theme, but rather the impressions of the artist, with several designs featuring the deity Shoki and one of Fudo Myoo. Although not individually numbered, the prints are number 258 from a limited edition of 480, published by Shibunkaku. A great example of Tokuriki's work and the first time we've seen this interesting series.
