View of Ogatsu Pass from Shione Pass in Mogami District

Series; Dawn of Modern Yamagata Prefecture

Dawn of Modern Yamagata Prefecture - Handsome design from the woodblock series "Dawn of Modern Yamagata Prefecture," based on Meiji era paintings by Takahashi Yuichi. Yuichi was a pioneer in the development of yoga or Western-style painting in Japan, studying with the English artist Charles Wirgman in Yokohama. In 1881, Yuichi received a commission to paint scenes of Yamagata Prefecture for Viscount Mishima Michitsune, who was the Ordinance of Yamagata Prefecture. Tanseisha of Kyoto published a group of 24 woodblocks based on these subjects. Each print features Tanseisha's publisher's seal in the right margin with the name of the carver and printer. These landscape views are beautifully printed, capturing the look of a watercolor painting with soft gradations of color and handsome calligraphic line work, in a larger format nice for display. From a limited edition, numbered in pencil in lower right margin. The first time we've seen this attractive series.
