Joichi Hoshi - Trained in oil painting, Joichi Hoshi began making prints after working in a printing shop, beginning with silkscreen before concentrating on woodblocks. He began exhibiting with the Nihon Hanga Kyokai in 1948 and became a member few years later. Hoshi's prints focus on nature, and he created a large series on stars and constellations before turning to his most famous subject, trees. His intricately carved designs commonly feature a single tree set against a solid background of metallic pigment. Intricately carved and demonstrating an incredible technical achievement, his beautiful prints have layers of rich color and texture. Works by this internationally recognized artist are great choice for a collector of modern Japanese woodblocks.
