Chinzei Hachiro Tametomo in Exile at Oshima, 1879 - Great image of the famous archer Chinzei Hachiro Tametomo (Minamoto no Tametomo) during his exile to the island of Oshima off Izu. He was banished there by the Taira for his loyalty to the former Emperor Sutoku. He stands on the rocky shore gripping his bow and watching as the ship that dropped him off sails off into the distance, the wind whipping his hair behind him. A native islander named Oniyasha sits beside him, gesturing at the departing vessel, a fish and an abalone resting near his feet. A large wave crashes against the shore, and the clouds are tinted golden yellow from the setting sun. A terrific portrait of this legendary warrior.
