Egawa Tarozaemon Playing the Koto, 1887 - Handsome scene portraying Egawa Tarozaemon, a military advisor and progressive thinker who encouraged the Tokugawa Shogunate to modernize Japan's defenses prior to the arrival of Commodore Perry. Egawa is shown playing the koto for Tokugawa Nariaki, the Lord of Mito, who kneels on a cushion as he listens. Several beauties look on from behind a screen as right, peering through a fine blind. Beautifully drawn with fine detail.
