Today, prints from Yoshitoshi's Thirty-six Ghosts series are some of the most highly sought after prints on the market. A wonderful area of collecting for the Yoshitoshi enthusiast.
The Lucky Teakettle of Morin Temple, No. 34 - Charming depiction from the tale of the lucky teakettle of Morin Temple. According to legend, a woodcutter saved a badger's life. To thank him, the badger magically transformed itself into a teakettle, which the woodcutter later sold to a priest at Morin Temple. When the priest set the kettle over a fire one day, the kettle grew legs, turned back into a badger, and ran about looking to escape. The badger also liked to take the form of a priest, and here the animal appears in a priest's robe, resting its paws and head on a low table before it, while a kettle hangs over a floor hearth at left. The room is shabby with cracked and missing plaster, and autumn grasses can be seen through the round window. An incredible illustration and a personal favorite from the series. Includes burnishing on the black oil lamp stand at right.
