Ichikawa Danjuro IX as Benkei in Kanjincho, 1887 - Terrific portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro IX in the role of Benkei from the popular kabuki play "The Subscription List." Disguised as a yamabushi or mountain priest, Benkei angrily snatches away the scroll containing the alleged subscription list from the prying eyes of the nobleman scrutinizing them. He scowls as he looks over his shoulder, a small black cap tied to his head with a braided white cord. He wears a black coat over his kimono, and a colorful sash around his neck trimmed with two fluffy pompoms. A fine expressive image with a bold composition, detailed with light embossing on the pompoms and cord.
