Comments - Fantastic nine-panel or triple triptych depiction of the Meiji Emperor arriving in Tokyo for the first time on October 13, 1868. Each triptych section is titled, reading from right to left. At right, standard bearers lead the way followed by a Western-style band playing drums and fifes, then by groups of soldiers surrounding high-ranking government officials on horseback. In the center, the Emperor rides over the Kyo Bridge in a large palanquin topped with a phoenix figurine. More soldiers and dignitaries follow beyond along Ginza Street. Crowds line the road to watch the procession, some people bowing respectfully as the entourage passes. An incredible design with wonderful detail. The first time we have seen all three triptychs together. A rare and great subject for a Yoshitoshi collector.
