A Fuji Arts Special Offer Auction

Selection of One Hundred Warriors - In 1868, Yoshitoshi witnessed firsthand the battles between the shogun's forces and Imperial troops during the Meiji Restoration, recording battlefield scenes for woodblock illustrations. The exposure to these violent and bloody conflicts directly affected his work, resulting in the often gruesome series "Yoshitoshi's Selection of One Hundred Warriors." Although based on his experiences, the artist depicts historic warriors from the sixteenth century rather than contemporary samurai. This exceptional group is known for its unflinching portrayal of the violence and gore of war, as well as courage and self-sacrifice, realistically depicting samurai in the heat of battle or the bloody aftermath. Published between 1868 - 1869, only 65 works were completed, but it remains one of his most important early works. These large, bold portraits are a fine choice for a Yoshitoshi collector or samurai enthusiast.
