Battle of Hakone, Sagami, 1871 - Dramatic scene of the Battle of Hakone, with a samurai falling backwards in mid-air, having been hit with a volley of shots fired by the soldiers at left center. His mouth open, he looks upwards, still gripping his sword. Other samurai and a soldier lie on the ground amidst guns and a scabbard. Clouds of smoke rise from the guns, drifting upwards, the dark mountains in the distance adding an ominous note. The first time we've seen this striking design.
