Spring: Plums on the First Day of Spring in Hara Village in Ebara District, 1884

Comments - Charming triptych depicting three beauties celebrating the first day of spring in a plum garden at Hara Village in Ebara. The woman in the center sits on a cloth covered bench with a poem slip and brush in hand, smiling over her shoulder at her companion. The beauty at left returns her smile, a toothpick in her mouth. At right, a woman grins happily as she ties a poem to the branch of a flowering plum tree. A few other visitors stroll about the garden, and tiny figure can be seen atop the hill on the opposite side of a pond. An attractive subject with fine line work in the hair, embossing on the white kimono collars, burnishing on the black obi, and a burnished stripe pattern on the olive green obi at left.

Artist - Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 27 3/8"

Condition - Nice color and detail. Small losses at corners, thinning spots, repaired. A couple creases, a couple small wrinkles on chin of one face.
