Sunrise: Ichikawa Danjuro IX as Chinzai Hachiro Tametomo, 1876 - Terrific kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro IX as the famous archer Chinzai Hachiro Tametomo (Minamoto no Tametomo). Carrying a wicker cage over his back, he looks to the side with an angry scowl as a flock of plovers takes flight above white-capped waves. He holds a fan in his other hand, which rests atop the hilt of his sword. His red kimono features the paulownia symbol of the Minamoto clan, and he wears spotted deerskin chaps usually worn for hunting. Nicely detailed with fine line work in the hair. Only the second time we've seen this design.

Artist - Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892)
