The Satsuma Rebellion - Known in Japanese as the Seinan Senso or Southwestern War, the Satsuma Rebellion took place in 1877 between disaffected former samurai and Meiji Imperial forces. With the fall of the Tokugawa Shogunate and the Meiji restoration of the Emperor in 1867, the samurai class was abolished, leaving this once ruling class unemployed and impoverished. Led by former Imperial Army General Saigo Takamori, samurai from the Satsuma domain in Kagoshima rebelled against the government, leading to a series of battles that ultimately ended in the defeat of the rebels at the Battle of Shiroyama, with Saigo committing seppuku or ritual suicide. Woodblock prints of the conflict were popular, providing accounts of the latest battles to a public eager for news.

The War at Kagoshima, 1877 - Incredible triptych illustrating a battle at Kagoshima during the Satsuma Rebellion, with a row of Imperial troops at right firing a volley of shots at the samurai rebels, bullets streaking across the sky. An explosion rocks the center of the battlefield, with flames and smoke billowing skyward and blood spurting from wounded samurai. A pile of bamboo poles flies into the air, along with a broken standard topped with the crest of the Shimazu Clan of Satsuma. At lower left, Saigo Takamori's brave and loyal second-in-command, Murata Shinpachi, stands beside his fallen horse, gripping a bloodied standard in one hand and a Satsuma flag in the other. After observing Saigo's death on the final day of the war, Murata committed suicide. The ground is scattered with dying warriors, abandoned weapons, and trampled standards. A dramatic and powerful depiction of war and a great early design by Yoshitoshi.
