Ono no Yoshifuru Ason Watching a Burning Ship, 1880 - Dramatic design of the tenth-century samurai Ono no Yoshifuru Ason watching a ship burn, with vivid orange flames lighting up the night sky. The Emperor sent Ono to do battle with Fujiwara Sumitomo, who had become a pirate and ruled a fleet of more than 1,500 ships off Iyo Province. Ono succeeded in burning many of the pirate ships and scattering the fleet. The warrior is perched atop a rocky cliff, leaning against his bow as the flames billow from the burning vessel, casting orange reflections on the water below. A rose glow spreads along the horizon, darkening to black. A striking and bold design, beautifully drawn and shaded.
