Original Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892) Japanese Woodblock Print
Picture of Trade with Many Nations in a Large French Port, 1866

Comments - Fantastic depiction of a large port in France that trades with many nations. Men and women are gathered along the shore in the foreground watching the ships in the harbor, wearing a variety of costumes, the women in long dresses with full skirts and one of the men wearing a green top hat. Two men at far right wear bloomers and what looks like turbans. In the center, a large steamship makes its way across the harbor, smoke pouring from the stack. Smaller sailing ships can be seen in the distance. Notice the small figures on the dock at left, who cast shadows, an unusual Western detail. This is a unsual subject for Yoshitoshi and a rare triptych. Beautifully drawn with elegant line work and wonderful detail.
