Evening Bell at Kotokuji, 1868

Series; Eight Views from Fine Tales of Warriors

Evening Bell at Kotokuji, 1868 - Fantastic scene of two warriors facing each other with spears at Kotokuji Temple as evening falls. An older samurai marches down the stone steps at right, biting his lower lip and grimacing angrily, his hair streaming out behind him. At left, a young warrior stands ready to spring at his opponent, crouching and gripping his spear with both hands, a defiant expression on his face. At lower right, a terrified monk has fallen to the ground, hiding his head beneath his hands. Tall pines frame the view, with the branches of the ancient tree at left propped up by wooden supports, with blossoming lotuses along the water's edge below. A striking composition with a beautiful landscape setting and finely detailed figures.
