Original Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892) Japanese Woodblock Print
A Competition among Powerful Magicians, 1869

Comments - Incredible Yoshitoshi scene showing a competition among powerful magicians, who appear with many supernatural creatures. At right, a huge snake menaces a young man astride a winged creature, its tongue darting out of its open mount. In the center, a snarling fox confronts an enormous rat as beauty looks up from a scroll with a spider on it. Just above, clouds of smoke billow from a black bowl held out by a seated figure. At left, an elderly man sits atop a large fish, a beauty rides a crane, and a young man unrolls a scroll with two tengu next to him. A fantastic early Yoshitoshi image with amazing detail, including embossing on the elderly man's white kimono and the white feathers of the crane. An outstanding subject illustrating characters from Japanese folklore.
