Fire: Sassa Narimasa’s Difficult Battle in Kyushu, 1867

Comments - Fantastic triptych showing Sassa Narimasa on horseback in the midst of a fiery battle scene in Kyushu. Clouds of smoke and red orange flames swirl all around him as he looks back over his shoulder, the wind whipping his loose hair. He grips a spear in one hand, his clothing singed and holes burned in his personal standard. The horse stands patiently, even though it has lost patches of fur. A charred corpse lies on the ground behind him, a stunned warrior leaning on the handle of his spear as he sits on the ground at right, shocked by the carnage. At upper left, a samurai gallops off on a white horse, the skull atop his standard shattered. An incredible scene of the valiant warrior surrounded by devastation. Realistically drawn and detailed with beautiful rich oxidized warm color. A very moving image. A fascinating early battle triptych by Yoshitoshi.
