The Battle of Odai Castle in Shinano Province, 1868

Comments - Dramatic scene of the Battle of Odai Castle in Shinano Province. At right, a samurai fires a shot from a gun, the bullet streaking across the landscape as a warrior on the other side fires back. In the center, a samurai clutches his hand to his face, blood rushing from a wound to his head. The battlefield is littered with dead and dying men, including several severed heads. Clouds of smoke rise into the night sky, obscuring the troops as they rush at each other. A fantastic if rather gory depiction of battle, with expressive figures and fine detail in the armor and weapons. An early Yoshitoshi samurai subject.
