Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Bando Hikosaburo V as Igami no Gonta in a scene from the play "Ichinomori Kujira no Oyose." In a famous scene, the Genji commander Kajiwara Kagetoki has come to a sushi shop in search of the Koremori, a Taira warrior, who has been hiding there. The son of the sushi shop owner, Igami no Gonta, has given him a sushi tub in which a severed head has been hidden, which his father Yazaemon is hoping to pass off as that of Koremori. Here, Gonta stares ahead with a tight-lipped frown as he carries the sushi tub under his arm. He wears a checked kimono tied with a red tie-dyed obi, a dotted cloth wrapped around his forehead. Another wooden sushi tub can be seen at right, and curtains hang in the doorway at upper left. An expressive figure in a nicely detailed setting.
