Kyogen at the Harukiza, 1900

Comments - Great kabuki portrait of Nakamura Fukusuke IV as a beauty in the kyogen or play "Kanjincho" at the Harukiza or Haruku Theater in Tokyo. In an interesting twist on the play, which normally features male roles, here, a beauty holds a blank sheet of paper, which she pretends is a list of contributors to a temple fund, reading it to allay the suspicions of the men who have stopped her party at the border. She looks up with a sweet smile, a full moon glowing softly above at temple perched atop a hillside at upper right. A striking composition with the single large figure dominating the composition. Includes embossing on the white kimono collar.

Artist - Yoshiiku (1833 - 1904)

Image Size - 14" x 28 3/4" + margins as shown

Condition - Nice color and detail. Horizontal folds. A few creases and spots.
