Series; Comparison of the Flowers of Fukagawa at the Height of Their Beauty

Shirotae of the Tagoya and her Kamuro Katsura, 1870 - Charming scene of the courtesan Shirotae of the Tagoya in an upper story room, patting the sides of her face dry with a blue and white cloth and smiling as she looks up. A blue plaid kimono decorated with sprays of flowers hangs over a lacquer rack behind her, and the folding screen at right features a street scene. Her kamuro or child apprentice Katsura leans over the railing at lower left, her long sleeves trailing on the floor. An attractive design from a rarely seen beauty series, detailed with burnishing on the lacquer rack, the black areas of the hanging kimono, and the black lacquer tobacco set at right.
