Series; The New Biography of Toyotomi Hideyoshi (Shinsen Taikoki)
Play in the Road at Okazaki, 1883 - Interesting scene of the young Hiyoshi-maru, the childhood name of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, rolling a hoop across a bridge at Okazaki, oblivious to the palanquin approaching at upper right. The samurai Tokugawa Takechiyo (the future Tokugawa Ieyasu), accompanying the beauty riding in the palanquin, gestures angrily at the boy, urging him to stop his game and move out of the party's way. A group of retainers surrounds the palanquin, the men frowning at the boy. Inside the palanquin, the beauty holds a boy on her lap, who watches the confrontation taking place outside. Wonderful detail in the expressive faces and a handsome setting with mountains lining the horizon beyond the river. Detailed with burnishing on the samurai's scabbards and the black lacquer roof of the palanquin.
