Comments - Terrific scene of the young Ushiwakamaru learning to fence with tengu under the direction of Sojobo at Mt. Kurama. Winged spirits with bird-like beaks and claws, tengu are known for their fencing ability, and they trained Ushiwakamaru, who becomes the master swordsman and samurai Yoshitsune. Here the young boy straddles an opponent as he fights off an aerial attack by one creature while simultaneously grabbing a pole wielded by another. King of the Tengu, the elderly Sojobo watches from a seat under a cluster of tall trees, the full moon rising above the silhouetted tree line at left. Wonderful detail in the fantastic tengu and beautiful soft shading in the sky along with handsome wood grain impression. A great image from the life of this legendary Minamoto warrior and a fantastic choice for display.
