The Gift of Cups for the Generals - Fascinating illustration of a ceremony presenting "Gift Cups" of sake from the emperor to the Imperial Army commanders who conquered the rebel samurai during the Satsuma Rebellion. A shirabyoshi dancer performs for the group, the generals wearing full dress uniform as they sit on chairs trimmed with fringe. Each holds a large red lacquer cup filled with sake, and is identified with a red name cartouche. An unusual subject for the Osaka artist Sadanobu II, who is best known for his kabuki prints, in a rare oban triptych format. A beautifully detailed design.

Artist - Sadanobu II (1848 - 1940)

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 27 7/8" + top margin as shown

Condition - Good color and detail. Horizontal and vertical folds. A few repairs, wrinkling throughout.
