The Night Battle of the Ako Martyrs - Great depiction of the night attack of the 47 ronin on Lord Kira's mansion. The ronin were their to avenge the death of their master, Lord Asano of the Ako Domain. At bottom, the ronin battle Kira's retainers with swords and spears to reach the coward, who is hiding in a storage shed, his head visible at center left. Two samurai stand on the broken down door armed with a spear and bow, the last line of defense before the ronin reach Kira. On the roof above, two ronin plunge their spears into the building in an effort to kill Kira, while a third blows a whistle to signal the discovery. A lively scene with wonderful color and detail from this historic incident, which was most famously fictionalized as the "Chushingura" (The Storehouse of Loyal Retainers).
