Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Kinugasa Myojin, 1889

Comments - Handsome portrait of the deity Kinugasa Myojin, who is regarded as the patron of sericulture. She stands on a purple cloud wearing a white tunic over long red pants, and a beaded necklace. She holds a mulberry branch, as mulberry leaves are used to feed the silkworms, and has other leaves atop her head. A border of blue and yellow silkworm cocoons frames the image, and silk moths and spools of silk adorn the red title cartouche at upper left. An interesting and unusual subject.
