Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Children Dancing and Doing Chores, 1884

Comments - Interesting print featuring two scenes of children enacting adult activities. The top image shows shirabyoshi dancers performing before a boy and girl standing in for the Meiji Emperor and Empress. Below, children take part in chores, with girls getting water from a well at lower left, others stretching cloth out to dry on a slanted board while a boy vegetable vendor offers them a pumpkin. In the room above, a girl styles her hair, while on the roof at upper right, a cat sleeps on the roof. A charming design with wonderful detail.
