One Thousand Years of Peaceful Life, 1894

Comments - Interesting scene of a royal couple at a ceremony celebrating one thousand years of peaceful life. At right, a dignitary reads from a proclamation, while ladies-in-waiting kneel behind him beside trays with a kettle and sake cups. At top center, an arrangement of pine and plum blossoms and cranes is symbolic of good fortune and longevity. The Meiji Emperor and Empress can be seen sitting behind a sheet blind at upper left. A pair of cranes and be seen in the garden at upper right. Wonderful detail in the elegant clothing and setting, with burnishing on the black uniforms. The first time we've seen this attractive design.
