The Successive Generations of the Tokugawa Shoguns, 1880

Comments - Fantastic group portrait of the fifteen generations of Tokugawa Shoguns. At top center, Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate sits on a low platform, his suit of armor on a stand beside him. At bottom center, the third Tokugawa Shogun Iemitsu sits on a tiger skin reading a scroll, an angry expression on his face. The fifteenth and final Shogun Tokugawa Yoshinobu sits on a chair at lower left wearing a Western military uniform and holding a sword. Wonderful detail in the expressive figures and clothing. A great subject for a collector interested in Japanese history.

Artist - Kyosai (1831 - 1889)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 29 1/2"

Condition - Nice detail. Backed with paper. Vertical folds, a few creases, curling.
