Rebel Headquarters at Kawajiri, 1877

Comments - Fantastic illustration from the Satsuma Rebellion of the rebel leader, Saigo Takamori, enjoying a large cup of sake while the Imperial Army launches an attack at the rebel headquarters in Kawajiri. Saigo looks up rather calmly as he holds the enormous shallow red lacquer cup, a beauty pouring wine into it from a warmer. The two women at right react with more concern, one pointing at the battle while the other shades her eyes with her hands for a better look. At left, the warrior Maehara Ikkaku gallops into the fray on horseback, gripping his sword above his head with both hands. The headquarters is depicted as quite luxurious, with elegant black lacquer furnishings, a platter of fish, and a tray of glass goblets at left. A fascinating subject, wonderfully detailed and colored.
