Kabuki Theater Sugoroku Game Board, 1883

Comments - Fantastic, large format, woodblock print sugoroku game board featuring activities relating to the kabuki theater. Sugoroku is a dice game similar to snakes and ladders that was popular with both adults and children. The large panel at top center depicts two sanbaso dancers, who perform an important ceremonial dance. Other scenes show workers painting backdrops for the stage, views of the audience and musicians, actors in a dressing room backstage, and a crowd in the street outside a theater. A terrific image with wonderful detail and an unusual subject. Dated Meiji 16 (1883).

Artist - Kunitoshi (1847 - 1899)

Image Size - 22 5/8" x 26 1/4" + margins as shown

Condition - Good color and detail. Horizontal and vertical folds. Large losses, holes, and tears, repaired. Wrinkling throughout.
