Comments - Terrific look inside the upper rooms of the Shinagawaya in the Shin-Yoshiwara in Tokyo. At bottom center, a beauty plays the koto, leaning over to follow a music book on the floor. She wears a striking kimono with a carp leaping up a waterfall. At left, a woman plucks a shamisen while her companion plays a kokyu, an instrument similar to a shamisen but played upright with a bow. At lower right, a young kamuro or child apprentice holds a letter while a courtesan smiles down at her, wearing a kimono patterned with cranes and a turtle. On a balcony at upper right, a kamuro delivers a letter to a puzzled man who scratches his head. Wonderful detail in the elegant fabrics and setting. The first time we've seen this attractive subject.
