Spirit of the Cherry Tree

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play commonly known as "Seki no To." At left, Princess Komachi approaches the home of the fiance, the nobleman Yoshimine Munesada. She lifts her hat for a better look at the barrier guard Sekibei as she stands beside the garden gate. Sekibei stares up at a blossoming cherry tree with a hollow trunk. He believes that the tree has supernatural powers, and contemplates chopping it down. Munesada watches from the right with an angry frown, clutching his sleeve to his chest. A beautiful setting with snow falling through the softly shaded night sky. The actors include Nakamura Fukusuke IV as Komachi and Nakamura Shikan IV as Sekibei. A great image from this popular play.
