Scene from Otokodate Harusame Gasa, 1897

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play Scene from Otokodate Harusame Gasa, which premiered at the Kabuki-za or Kabuki Theater in Tokyo in 1897. The prosperous rice broker Oguchiya Gyou stands in the center, flinging his hands out at his side as he looks at the courtesan Hinotoyama with a frown, his brows furrowed. At left, the young beauty stares back at him with a sober expression, gesturing towards him with one hand. At right, the courtesan Katsuragi eyes Gyou suspiciously, a roll of tissues in one hand and a slender pipe in the other. She wears a lavender kimono patterned with cherry blossoms over a red tie-dyed under robe, tied with a pale green floral print obi that reverses to red tie-dyed fabric. From left, the actors are Sawamura Gennosuke IV, Ichikawa Danjuro IX, and Nakamura Fukusuke IV. Nicely detailed with burnishing on the black kimono trim and faint embossing on the white collars.
