47 Ronin outside Moronao's Palace Gate, 1884

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene from the classic play "Kanadehon Chushingura" of the 47 ronin assembling outside the entrance to Moronao's palace just before the night attack. In the center, the samurai Otaka Bungo grips an enormous wooden mallet over his head as he prepares to smash in the wooden gate. At right, Oboshi Yuranosuke, the leader of the ronin, holds a spear, looking up with a serious frown. He carries a tasseled command baton in his other hand. All of the samurai wear the dogtooth bordered robe over their armor, some in purple and others in black. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikugoro as Akagaki Genzo, Bando Kakitsu as Yazama Shigetaro, Nakamura Shikan, Ichikawa Danjuro, and Nakamura Fukusuke. A handsome design with lively color.

Artist - Kunisada III (1848 - 1920)

Image Size - 14" x 28"

Condition - Nice color and detail. A couple creases at edges, crease on Yuranosuke's face.
