Scene from Tenka ichi chushin kagami, 1884

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the play "Tenka ichi chushin kagami" at the Shintomi Theater in Edo of two men meeting in the snow outside a daimyo's mansion. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikugoro V as Genzo Akagi and Ichikawa Danjuro IX as Enzan Yozaemon. At left, the samurai Akagi looks up with a grimace as he takes a toothpick from his mouth, a container of sake in his other hand. He wears a rust colored coat over a black kimono tucked into striped pants, and a woven hat. At right, Yozaemon looks back at him with a solemn frown from beneath his umbrella. The red entrance gate behind them leads to a large daimyo's mansion behind walls. Pine trees frame the sky as snow falls over the scene, rendered with a hand-applied spattering of gofun (white pigment). A great design, beautifully composed with a lovely setting.
