Ushiwakamaru Serenading a Beauty, 1889

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of the young Ushiwakamaru, the future Minamoto no Yoshitsune, serenading a beauty at night. He stands outside the home at left, playing the flute, as his footman kneels in the center holding a lantern. At right, the beauty looks up from the koto she is playing, a sober expression on her face, while the woman next to her holds up a lamp to see who is playing the music. Blossoming cherry trees frame the night sky above. Nicely detailed with burnishing on the black cap and the black collar of the footman, and accents of metallic pigment that have oxidized to a dark tone.

Artist - Kunisada III (1848 - 1920)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 27 3/8"

Condition - Nice color and detail. Vertical wrinkles. A few small repairs, including two holes on one face.
