Comments - Intriguing depiction of the ruthless Lord Hojo Takatoki being tormented by tengu, winged spirits with bird-like faces. After Takatoki's dog bit an old woman, the woman's samurai son killed the animal. The enraged Takatoki ordered the samurai killed, but his advisors finally convinced him to pardon the warrior. The nobleman then called for wine and dancing to help him forget his anger, when suddenly tengu appeared to torture and humble him. Here, he sits at right holding an enormous cup of sake as the dark gray goblins appear, frowning as they cavort about the room. The beauty Jijo Kunigasa dancing in the center looks up with a slightly worried frown, while the man lower left watches the creatures warily. The actors include Nakamura Fukusuke as Kinugasa and Ichikawa Danjuro as Takatoki. A fascinating supernatural kabuki scene.
