Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play "Hanagawado Wakai Mono Ju" at the Ichimura Theater in Edo of three men in an interior. At left, the otokodate or street knight Banzui Chobei stares ahead with a frown as he holds a white cloth draped over his shoulder. In the center, the samurai Teranishi Kanshin glares angrily at Chobei as he grips the end of his sword, ready to draw it if necessary. His coat and kimono feature an eerie pattern of stylized skulls and ribcages. A large knife is stuck into a cutting board on the floor between the men. At right, the robber and murderer Shirai Gonpachi watches his companions from an upper room, furious expression on his face as he pushes up one sleeve. At left ledger books hang on the wall, and bonito chips tied together with straw rest on a a white tray below. From left, the actors are Kawarazaki Gonjuro I, Nakamura Shikan IV, and Ichimura Uzaemon XIII. Wonderful detail in the figures and setting, with a burnished geometric pattern on the black kimono.
