Delivering Enemy Heads, 1873

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of two samurai delivering enemy heads to a beauty. Each warrior has a cylindrical box used to contain a decapitated head as proof of an enemy's death. The beauty looks over her shoulder with a distraught expression, her mouth agape as she clutches the edges of her black floral outer robe. The men are dressed in formal court attire, wearing elegant patterned kamishimo over solid-colored kimono. Nice, large expressive figures with vivid color, bordered with a simulated red lacquer frame. From left, the actors are Nakamura Shikan IV, Bando Mitsugoro VI, and Bando Hikosaburo IV. Beautifully detailed with a subtle burnished design on the gray kimono at left. and embossing on the white collar at right.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 27 5/8" + margins as shown

Condition - Nice detail. Backed with paper. A few small repairs, horizontal centerfold, indented line on beauty's chin and neck.
