Comments - Great kabuki portrait of Onoe Kikugoro V as the wicked magician Nikki Danjo in the play "Ume momoji Nishiki no Dateori" at the Ichimura Theater in Edo. Danjo had transformed into a rat to steal an incriminating scroll. The loyal samurai Otokonosuke struck the rat with his fan, and when Danjo returned to human form, he had a cut on his forehead. Here, he looks ahead with an angry sneer, blood visible on the cut. He wears a patterned blue and white kimono, his hair pulled back into a thin topknot with wings at the sides of his head. A boldly patterned curtain creates a striking backdrop for the figure. Nicely detailed with fine linework in the hair.
