Shibaraku, 1864

Comments - Fantastic kabuki depiction of Kawarazaki Gonjuro I in the role of the hero Aoto Goro Terutsuna in the play "Shibaraku" (Wait a Minute!) at the Nakamura Theater in Edo, one of the eighteen kabuki dramas made popular by the Ichikawa Danjuro line of actors. He appears in the role's trademark voluminous rust colored robe, with his family crest of three concentric rice measures in white on the shoulders and sleeves, the costume filling the page dramatically. Red stage makeup and a flared wig add to his imposing appearance. A circular inset at upper right show Bando Hikosaburo V as the evil nobleman, wearing a magnificent dragon robe and a headdress topped with sacred jewels and trimmed with beads. An incredible composition and a terrific image from this famous play.
