The Pirate Kezori

Comments - Bold portrait of the famous pirate Kezori grabbing hold of the courtesan Kojuro's red obi on the deck of a ship. She turns away in fright, cowering behind her raised sleeve. She wears a purple outer kimono decorated with chrysanthemums and a peony, her hair adorned with many hairpins and a purple tie-dyed ribbon. Kezori wears an exotic purple shirt patterned with a dragon and trimmed with a ruffled collar, a heavy robe draped over his shoulders. His hair sticks up wildly atop his head, adding to his imposing appearance. A mast rises in the center with crates of merchandise stacked below. Ichikawa Danjuro plays Kezori. A handsome design.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 13 7/8" x 18 5/8" + margins as shown
