Scene from Edo Sakura, 1896

Comments - Terrific illustration from the popular kabuki play "Edo Sakura" a tale about the young street knight, Sukeroku, who is actually one of the Soga Brothers in disguise. Here, Sukeroku rudely insults his rival, the elderly samurai Ikyu, by offering him a pipe held between his toes. Ikyu frowns at him angrily, wearing an impressive matching coat and kimono patterned with a dragon and red flames, his long white hair flowing over his shoulders. The object of their enmity is the beautiful courtesan Miuraya Agemaki, with whom both are in love. She stands at left smiling sweetly, pulling up the collar of her robe. Her obi features a striking design of a carp leaping up a waterfall. From left, the actors are Nakamura Fukusuke, Ichikawa Danjuro IX, and Nakamura Shikan. A handsome design with large figures and lively color, beautifully detailed with embossing on the white hair and beard.
