Scene from Koko ga Edo Ko-ude no Tatehiki, 1863

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene from the play "Koko ga Edo Ko-ude no Tatehiki" at the Ichimura Theater in Edo. At right, the commoner Ude no Kisaburo uses a ladder to fend off an attack by a group of rogues, his wife Oiso behind him. Clad in boldly patterned blue and white kimono, the gang approaches the couple with their swords drawn, their sleeves tied back with rope. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Kuzo III as Tsurugi no Chozo, Bando Mitsugoro VI as Maekami Sakichi, Sawamura Tossho II as Akari Jinzo, Ichimura Uzaemon XIII as Maboroshi Genta, Ichikawa Kodanji IV, and Onoe Kikujiro II. A lively scene with expressive figures and a nicely detailed setting outside the gate of a mansion.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14" x 29" + margin as shown
