Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene from the play "Iwakura Sogen renbo no tsumagoto" at the Nakamura Theater in Edo. In the center, a man sitting in the snow raises a sword threateningly above his head. At left, Princess Origoto turns away in fright, hiding behind her kimono sleeve, her green obi trailing on the floor behind her. At right, the monk Sogen recoils, throwing his hand out defensively as he grimaces angrily. His short hair sticks up atop his head, with loose wisps framing his face, giving him a disheveled appearance. The scene takes place in the countryside, with snow blanketing the temples and trees in the distance. From left, the actors Sawamura Tanosuke III, Onoe Baiko 4.5, and Bando Hikosaburo V, Nice expressive figures.
