Comments - Interesting kabuki double portrait from the play "Ningen Banji Kane no Yo no Naka," which premiered at the Shintomi Theater in Tokyo in February 1879. The man at top clutches his head with an alarmed expression as he looks over his shoulder. His hair is cropped short in the latest Meiji fashion, and he holds a small purse, perhaps a tobacco pouch. The elderly woman below looks up at him with a suspicious frown as she tugs on the edge of his striped coat. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikugoro V and Ichikawa Sadanji I. Expressive figures, nicely set off by a deep red background.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14" x 9 3/8" + margins as shown

Condition - Good color and detail. Vertical wrinkle near center.
