Comparison of Peerless Heroes of Ancient and Modern Times, 1882

Comments - Incredible kabuki scene of Honda Tadakatsu and Kato Kiyomasa dueling. At left, Tadakatsu uses the handle of his spear to block a blow from his opponent. He turns his head to the side with a solemn frown, wearing a fine suit of armor and a battle helmet topped with antlers. At right, Kiyomasa lunges forward with his pole arm, his eyes blazing with fierce determination. Behind them, a dragon emerges from a swirling cloud to battle a tiger appearing out of the sky below, each rendered with loose calligraphic brushwork. Nakamura Shikan appears as Kiyomasa. A terrific design, with the large colorful characters set off by the subdued background. Beautifully detailed.
