Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play Ashiya Doman Ouchi Kagami," a drama about the geisha Oshun and her lover, the murderer Denbei, who decide to commit suicide rather than be parted. Here, a beauty is caught between two yakko or footman, suspiciously eying the fellow at left with a frown. He glares back at her, a small box tied to the end of his cased sword. The man at right watches her with an angry expression. Red flames dance in the evening sky, the sign of a supernatural occurrence. Nice large expressive figures with soft shading on the background.
